The Black-backed Jackal (Canis mesomelas) is a common jackal species found in Southern and Eastern Africa, including Namibia, Botswana, and Tanzania. It has a distinctive black saddle on its back, a golden-brown body, and white underparts. Adults weigh 8 to 14 kg (18 to 31 lbs) and measure 60 to 75 cm (24 to 30 inches) in length. This omnivorous animal inhabits savannas, grasslands, and scrublands, feeding on small mammals, birds, fruits, and carrion. Black-backed Jackals are generally monogamous and live in family groups, known for their vocalizations like high-pitched howls.They play an important role in controlling small mammal populations and scavenging, contributing to ecological balance.
